Our expert guide on storing your perfume to keep it fresh

You might not have given perfume storage much thought, other than leaving your bottles on a bathroom shelf or dressing room table, but did you know that improper storage will directly affect how long fragrances last and how they smell?

In this guide, our fragrance experts detail our top tips to help ensure your favourite perfumes aren’t being degraded over time by temperature changes, sunlight, oxidisation, and other environmental factors.

Why is it important to store perfume correctly?

Perfumes and fragrances have a delicate composition that can be affected by things like light exposure, heat and air. If your favourite perfumes are exposed to these things, the scent may change or deteriorate over time. This means the smell that you love may no longer be how you remember it, or it may not last as long on the skin.

When perfumes are stored correctly, they retain their original character and scent profile. This can help to improve longevity - something that is particularly important for expensive luxury and high-end perfumes.

How to store perfume

Luckily, keeping your perfume in tip top shape isn’t too difficult if you follow these four simple tips:

1. Store in a cool place away from direct sunlight

A lot of fragrances come in beautifully designed bottles, so it’s only right that you’d want to display them. However, direct sunlight is a big problem for fragrances. UV light can penetrate the glass which will degrade the perfume inside, especially where natural extracts are used.

In addition, the heat from the sun will speed up oxidation, which breaks down the notes in the perfume, changing the overall scent profile, all the while discolouring the liquid itself. This can sometimes make perfumes look darker or cloudy.

You can keep your perfumes in a drawer or cupboard to avoid this. Alternatively, keep them in the original outer packaging or display them on a shelf where you know there is no direct sunlight.

2. Keep the cap on your perfume to keep it fresh

Perfume doesn’t do great with too much air exposure. Over time, oxygen can slowly change the scent, making it smell a little “off” or not quite as fresh as when you first bought it. Always put the cap back on properly after using your fragrance and make sure it’s sealed tightly. This helps protect the scent and keeps it smelling its best for longer.

If you like to decant your perfume into travel bottles for when you’re on the go, make sure they close securely to minimise air getting in. Alternatively, travel-sized perfumes are a great option, as they’re designed specifically for portability and freshness.

3. Don’t store your perfume in the bathroom

Keeping perfume in the bathroom might seem convenient, especially if you apply it after a shower, but it’s actually not the best environment for fragrance.

Bathrooms tend to get warm and humid, and those constant temperature changes can gradually affect the scent and weaken the formula over time. Perfumes are best kept in cool, dry spaces with a stable temperature, ideally somewhere around 15–20°C.

A bedroom drawer, wardrobe shelf, or dressing table away from direct sunlight is usually a much better spot.

4. Store upright and don’t shake the bottle

Always store your perfume bottle upright to help prevent leaks and keep everything sealed properly.

It’s also best not to shake the bottle, shaking can introduce tiny air bubbles into the fragrance, which may speed up the oxidation process and affect the scent over time.

How to store perfume in hot weather

If you’re amidst the blistering summer heat, you may be wondering how to keep your perfume out of the heat. The simple answer is to just pick a cool, dry place, such as a wardrobe or cupboard.

Some may recommend that you store perfumes in the fridge, however because of the reasons listed above about temperature fluctuations - we would not advise that you do this. The cold temperatures are likely to have an adverse effect on the formulation.

How to display perfume bottles

If you’ve built up a collection of beautifully designed fragrance bottles, there’s no reason they need to stay hidden away in a drawer. Perfume bottles can double as elegant décor pieces and add a personal touch to your space, as long as they’re displayed thoughtfully and stored correctly.

The key is finding the balance between showcasing your fragrances and protecting them from heat, sunlight, and humidity.

Choose the right place to display your perfumes

Before arranging your collection, think carefully about where it will live. Try to choose an area that stays cool and dry throughout the day, away from direct sunlight, radiators, or steamy bathrooms.

A shelf or shaded vanity table usually works much better than a windowsill or bathroom cabinet. Keeping your fragrances out of harsh light will help preserve the scent.

Add height and layers

One of the easiest ways to make a perfume collection feel more intentional is by creating different levels in the display. Adding tiers, trays, or small stands helps every bottle remain visible and stops the arrangement from looking cluttered.

Rotating display stands, mirrored trays, and marble dishes all work beautifully for this. You can place your favourite or most intricate bottles towards the front, while taller or simpler designs sit slightly behind them to create depth. Organising bottles by colour, brand, or style can also make the display feel more cohesive.

Turn vintage perfume bottles into decor pieces

Vintage perfume bottles can make decorative accents, even once they’re empty. Their detailed glasswork and nostalgic feel can add character and personality into a room.

Style them on bookshelves, heirloom trays, bedside tables, or alongside framed photographs and candles. A few carefully placed vintage bottles can instantly make a space feel more homely.

How long does a perfume last if stored correctly?

When stored correctly, most perfumes will last anywhere from 3 to 5 years, although some high-quality fragrances can last for decades when they’re not exposed to oxygen, heat, or sunlight.

It should be noted though that this isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer because how long a perfume lasts depends on several factors, including the ingredients used, the concentration of the fragrance, and how it’s stored over time.

Signs your perfume may have expired

Over time, you may notice changes that suggest a fragrance is past its best, including:

  • A sour, metallic, or “off” smell
  • A darker change in colour
  • Cloudiness in the liquid
  • The scent fading much faster on the skin

While expired perfume usually isn’t harmful, it may not smell the way it was originally intended to.
